  • What To Wear To Your Engagement Session

What To Wear To Your Engagement Session

Alright folks, let’s talk about something super important, what should you wear to your engagement session? You’ve nailed down the perfect partner, picked a date, but have no idea what to wear. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Here are six solid tips to help you look your best while staying true to yourselves!

    Comfort is Key

First things first, comfort above all. Before you even think about style or how those shoes are stunning, make sure you can breathe, walk, and move naturally in whatever outfit you pick. You don’t want to be readjusting your clothes or feeling stiff in your photos! When you’re comfortable, it’ll show in photos.

    Think Timeless

Fashion trends come and go, but photos last a lifetime. Focus on timeless, classic pieces rather than trendy items that may not age well. Simple and elegant choices will always stand the test of time, unlike current trends that might make you cringe in the future. Avoid incorporating overly trendy items into your engagement photos to ensure they remain timeless!

    Location Matters

Where are you shooting? A beach session calls for different outfit compared to a downtown setting. If you’re photographing in a coastal setting during the summer, I always recommend linens or any breathable clothing pieces. If you’re getting them done in a downtown area or somewhere architectural, you can wear something more elegant!

    Cordinating Over Matching

Your engagement session is about the two of you, not cloning yourself. Avoid dressing in identical outfits!! Pick a color palette and mix different patterns and fabrics within that range. This way, you look like you go together without completely matching outfits.

    Accessorize

Accessories can add that extra fun touch to your outfit but don’t go overboard. A necklace, a cool watch, or a scarf (in the winter of course) can elevate your look without stealing the spotlight. Remember, the focus should stay on you two as a couple. It’s about subtle enhancements, not distractions.

    Neutrals

Now, let’s get into why I usually recommend neutral colors for such occasions. Neutral tones have this amazing ability to keep the focus on yourather than what you’re wearing. Greys, whites, beige, and soft browns create a cohesive look that is both understated and sophisticated! While vivid colors and bold patterns can be appealing, they can also be distracting in photos. Neutrals are the perfect balance, offering a timeless appeal that won’t date your pictures. Plus, they blend seamlessly with various backgrounds, be it an urban setting, nature, or a cozy indoor location!

To wrap it up, remember that your engagement photos are a reflection of who you are as a couple. Follow these tips, but don’t lose sight of your personal style. After all, these photos are about capturing your unique connection and the love you share. So pick outfits that make you feel great, enjoy the session, and you won’t regret it. Happy planning!💍

    Kind Words

“My daughter McKenzie recently got married and Liz and her team worked diligently that entire day and night. But for me, as those memories fade away, over the years, I will forever be thankful as Liz captured every smile, every dance move and all the people that love this new couple. I have nothing to worry about, my memories will return by simply seeing all of Sterling Life’s talent done on February 17, 2024! Jill and I appreciate the gift you have given us!!”

  • Beautiful winter engagement in Lynchburg

It’s Friday! Just to start your weekend off in a great way, I am sharing Mandy & Ryan’s beautiful winter engagement with you all. I had so much fun with them hanging out. I can’t wait for their wedding which is just a few weeks away! I feel like 2017 is just chugging along with perfect people that are coming into my life. I am so happy that Mandy & Ryan chose me to be their photographer. I have loved even the small beginning of getting to know them. We shared some a-ha, Beyonce, and an “it’s such a small world” moments. They were all equally amazing.

I first arrived at the session to be greeted by Mandy and two of her (and Ryan’s) friends. We went down to her room and we talked about what outfit options she had. I think she picked perfect outfits, one casual and everyday and just a little more formal one for her second option.

I particularly love when my couples have locations in mind that are special to them. It really creates a storyline that is unique to you. Of course, there are so many amazing places to do sessions in Virginia, but one that has meaning to you, and a real story, well that is just icing on the cake. We started their session in the exact same place when they first met. Hearing them talk about each other as we struck up conversation was awesome. It was real and authentic and there was just a ton of gratitude. It’s one of the things I always love seeing in my couples. As a wife to my truest best friend, I know what this feels like, and to see other people be able to share that makes my days.

We also hopped over to Randolph College and walked around campus a bit. It is truly a gorgeous campus. I loved that we were able to walk around two different locations to make such a variety of images for their gallery. No shortage of love and happiness here. Mandy & Ryan – you two are awesome people. I can’t wait for March!

  • A Charlottesville Sunrise Engagement

I’m trying my best to catch up on some sessions from 2016 that haven’t been blogged yet and this Charlottesville Sunrise Engagement session is one of them. Blogging more was one of my goals for 2016, and while I did a MUCH better job than in previous years, it’s still something I’m working on.

In October, I got a chance to do a sunrise engagement session with the beautiful Grace and her fiance Robert. It was so much fun! Yes, getting up super early in the dark to get out to the session was a little rough, but I knew it would be worth it.

When I first met Grace, we had an instant connection. We shared some pizza at Mellow Mushroom and we chatted about life and wedding planning. Grace had an awesome idea to do part of their engagement session at the a Farmer’s Market. It was just brilliant. Since Farmer’s Market’s tend to be held earlier in the day, I tossed out the idea of a sunrise session. It was gold. Literally, it was the most perfect golden sunrise followed up by such fun at the market. Grace and Robert are so easy going and a joy to be around. I cannot wait for their May wedding at Wolftrap Farm.

And just in case you were wondering – yes, I will take ALL the sunrise engagement sessions!
