  • How To Prep For Your Wedding Day

How To Prep For Your Wedding Day

First of all, huge congratulations on your engagement! This is such an exciting time for you both. Having documented countless weddings over the years, I’ve learned a thing or two about what makes the day flow smoothly and how you can get those perfect, candid shots that reflect the true essence of your love story.

Weddings are a whirlwind of emotions, details, and fleeting moments. It might seem overwhelming at times, but don’t worry – you’re in good hands. To help ease some of that pre-wedding jitters and ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible, I’ve put together some helpful tips and insights from a photographer’s viewpoint. These pointers are designed to help you prep for your wedding day, ensuring that you’re feeling relaxed, joyful, and truly present. Because, after all, the best photos happen when you’re genuinely enjoying every moment!!

    1. Communicate Clearly with Your Photographer

First things first, communication is key! Your photographer should be your ally in planning the timeline, knowing your must-have shots, and understanding the style you envision. Schedule a pre-wedding consultation (or a couple of them!) to go over key details such as timeline breakdown, family shot lists, candid moments, etc.

    2. Create a Detailed Timeline

A well-structured timeline is a lifesaver. Plan your day down to the minute, but also leave wiggle room for unexpected delays (hint: they will happen). Here’s a rough outline to consider:

Getting Ready (2-3 hours): Include detail shots like your dress, shoes, rings, and other accessories. Factor in travel time if you’re getting ready at a different location from the venue.

First Look (30-45 mins): If you’re doing a first look before the ceremony, allocate enough time for your reaction and some intimate portraits.

Ceremony (30 mins – 1 hour): Varies based on the type of ceremony.

Family Formals (30-45 mins): Have a helper organize relatives so this goes smoothly.

Wedding Party Photos (30 mins): Fun and candid shots with your closest friends.

Couple’s Portraits (1 hour): These portraits are some of the most cherished, so make sure you have plenty of time to relax and enjoy this part without feeling rushed

Cocktail Hour (1 hour): If timed well, you might be able to join part of this.

Reception (3-5 hours): Include key moments like the first dance, speeches, cake cutting, and general dancing!

    3. Weather-Proof Your Plans

Living in a world where Mother Nature follows our every request would be marvelous, but reality often doesn’t comply. Always have a backup plan for any potential weather comes.

    04. Prioritizing comfort on your wedding day

This is essential to ensure you enjoy every moment without unnecessary distractions. Start by wearing shoes that are already broken in to prevent any discomfort from new, stiff footwear. Staying hydrated is crucial, so keep water and perhaps a few snacks close by to maintain your energy levels. Lastly, consider your attire—if your wedding dress or tuxedo feels too tight or restrictive, it might be wise to have a secondary outfit ready for the reception that allows for easier movement and comfort.

    5. Delegation is Your Best Friend

You can’t do everything yourself—and you shouldn’t have to! Assign tasks to trusted friends, family, or a wedding coordinator.

    6. Prepping for Candid Moments

While posed photos are beautiful, candid moments often tell the real story. Encourage your guests to be themselves and soak in the day. You can do this by having an unplugged ceremony, fun activities, or a dance floor.

    7. Golden Hour Magic

The hour before sunset, known as the “Golden Hour,” is the perfect time for some breathtaking and ethereal photos. Talk to your photographer about planning a small window during this time for couple’s portraits. The warm, soft light creates dreamy, romantic images that you’ll treasure forever.

    8. Be Present and Enjoy Every Moment

This might be the most crucial piece of advice. Wedding days can be a whirlwind, but take moments throughout the day to breathe, soak in the atmosphere, and really be present. Your joy and love are what make the photos truly memorable.

    Kind Words

“My daughter McKenzie recently got married and Liz and her team worked diligently that entire day and night. But for me, as those memories fade away, over the years, I will forever be thankful as Liz captured every smile, every dance move and all the people that love this new couple. I have nothing to worry about, my memories will return by simply seeing all of Sterling Life’s talent done on February 17, 2024! Jill and I appreciate the gift you have given us!!”

  • Christmas Inspired Wedding – Jenny & Nick

I am so excited to share Jenny and Nick’s Christmas inspired wedding with you all! It was a beautiful, chilly day just a week before Christmas. Lucky for us the rain held out and it was just gorgeous. Jenny was a very hands on bride, working closely with her florist for the perfect florals. She looked just breathtaking and classy in her wedding gown that she got from her friends bridal shop. Nick looked sharp in a classic suit and tie.

Jenny and Nick share a love for a lot of things including music, Harry Potter and their dear friends. When we first got to the Church, it was a bit misty and I was hoping it would clear up in time for some outdoor portraits – which it did. They had a beautiful church ceremony followed by a reception at Celebrations at the Resevoir in Moseley, VA. Celebrations was lit up with Christmas trees and light that gave off this glowing, intimate feeling. I can’t say enough about how gracious everyone was, not for me, but to be a part of this amazing celebration of these two people. It was such a wonderful way to wrap up my 2016 weddings. I am so thankful to have spent another year documenting the most important days of people’s lives.

Jenny and Nick, thank you so much for having me join in your day. I wish you so much happiness and joy for your future together.
